Puerto Aventuras, Quintana Roo — Police in this coastal community south of Playa del Carmen arrested a man who allegedly set fire to a house while arguing with his partner, who was inside the home with the couple’s young children.
The incident occurred at Manzana 2, Lot 17 in the third phase of the Puerto Maya subdivision, according to preliminary reports. Officers said the man and his partner were engaged in a heated argument in front of the children, and the confrontation grew increasingly aggressive inside the home.
Fearing the situation would escalate, the children took advantage of a moment of distraction to slip out of the house and ask neighbors for help. As they sought assistance, the dispute continued inside and the man allegedly began setting fire to objects.
Flames spread quickly through the interior of the house while the woman remained inside, facing a dangerous situation.
Municipal police officers responded to the emergency call and arrested the man at the scene. Firefighters also arrived and worked to control and extinguish the blaze before it could spread to other homes.
A specialized unit for family and gender violence responded as well and provided assistance to the woman and her children.
The suspect was taken to police holding cells and later turned over to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which will determine his legal status. He is under investigation on probable charges of family violence, attempted homicide and property damage.
