Magnicharters Ceases Operations, Stranding Passengers in Cancún as Profeco Confirms Total Shutdown

Passengers waiting at Cancún airport after Magnicharters flight cancellations

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Mexico’s Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) confirmed that airline Magnicharters has completely ceased operations and closed its offices nationwide, leaving dozens of passengers stranded in Cancún and other locations.

Profeco head Iván Escalante announced that the agency has been unable to contact company representatives after finding their offices in Monterrey, Mexico City, and Cancún shuttered. “There’s no way to locate them,” Escalante said in a national radio interview. “We visited the registered Magnicharters facilities for notifications or conciliation procedures—one address in Monterrey and two in Mexico City—and they were closed. We posted notices on the facades telling consumers they can contact us. The most important thing is getting people to fly.”

According to Escalante, since the airline announced its suspension of operations, Profeco has coordinated with the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport, other airlines, and the National Chamber of Air Transport (Canaero) to relocate passengers on available flights. These efforts have already moved one group of stranded travelers from Cancún to Monterrey.

The consumer agency reported it has:

  • Provided assistance to over 100 people at airport terminal help desks
  • Received more than 100 calls through the Consumer Hotline
  • Processed numerous electronic complaints
  • Documented at least 14 canceled flights

Authorities are prioritizing passenger relocation while preparing to initiate administrative and conciliation procedures once communication with the airline is established, particularly if affected users aren’t promptly assisted or rebooked.
