Mascot Costume Race Coming to Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — Businesses, institutions, community organizations and residents are being invited to enter a costumed mascot in an unusual summer sporting event planned for Isla Mujeres.

The Carrera de Botargas, or Mascot Costume Race, will take place Saturday, August 22, at 5 p.m. at the Domo Bicentenario in the La Gloria neighborhood, according to an announcement from the Isla Mujeres municipal government.

The event is being organized by the administration of Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde as a recreational activity intended to bring families together while encouraging exercise, creativity and community participation.

In Mexico, a botarga is a performer wearing a large, full-body character or mascot costume. The costumes are commonly used by businesses, sports teams, public agencies and nonprofit organizations for promotions and community events.

Participating mascots will compete in a race at the covered sports complex, turning characters normally seen outside stores, at public events or in advertising campaigns into athletes for the afternoon.

The municipality said the invitation is open to entrepreneurs, companies, associations, institutions and members of the public who have a mascot costume. Participating organizations will also have an opportunity to introduce their mascots and brands to island residents in a family-oriented setting.

Organizers have not yet announced the length or format of the race, whether it will include obstacles or how winners will be selected. No registration fee, entry deadline, age requirement or prize information was included in the initial announcement.

The event will be held at the Domo Bicentenario, one of the municipality’s main covered venues for sports, recreation and community gatherings in the residential neighborhood of La Gloria.

The race is part of a broader municipal effort to make public sports facilities available for activities beyond traditional athletic competitions. Organizers said the emphasis will be on participation, creativity and entertainment rather than serious competition.
