Isla Mujeres tops Quintana Roo tourism with 85% occupancy

Quintana Roo — Isla Mujeres ranks among the most popular destinations to welcome the new year, as the island is where the first rays of sun enter Mexico, generating a significant influx of visitors. According to data from the Quintana Roo Tourism Secretariat (Sedetur), it could close the year with occupancy rates above 85 percent.

Additionally, it is expected that during the eve of the new year, locals and tourists visiting Cancún will increase crossings to Isla Mujeres, where it has become a tradition to welcome the first glow of the sun at Punta Sur. Authorities even hold celebrations in the town hall square to ring in the new year.

Furthermore, according to search engines, Isla Mujeres appears among the destinations with the most mentions during the December season, as travelers seek information about tourist packages to visit the island with the goal of experiencing being the first to receive the sun’s rays.

It should be noted that Sedetur statistics position Isla Mujeres and Costa Mujeres as the destinations that have led occupancy in the last two years, so even during the low season, lodging reaches 70 to 75 percent, while the rest of Quintana Roo’s destinations barely achieve 60 percent.

Another distinctive feature of the island is that it is frequently recognized and ranked for having one of the best beaches in the world (Playa Norte) through publications like TripAdvisor and National Geographic, which generates expectations among tourists who seek to visit Isla Mujeres year after year.
