Intense Rains and Possible Floods Hit Southern Mexico

Dark storm clouds over a flooded street in southern Mexico

Mexico City — The National Meteorological Service (SMN) has warned of intense rainfall starting Saturday across southern and southeastern Mexico, with accumulations of up to 150 millimeters that could trigger flooding, waterlogging, river overflows, and landslides in vulnerable areas.

The weather conditions are being driven by a cyclonic circulation in the upper atmosphere, low-pressure channels, and a steady influx of moisture from the Pacific Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean Sea. Thunderstorms and heavy downpours are expected throughout Saturday.

The hardest-hit states are expected to be Oaxaca and Chiapas, where rainfall of 75 to 150 mm is forecast. Guerrero, Campeche, and Yucatán will see heavy precipitation of 25 to 75 mm. The SMN also warned of possible thunderstorms and hail, which could raise river and stream levels.

On Sunday, the rainy weather will expand to affect more regions, including Puebla and Veracruz, where intense rains are expected. The risk of urban flooding, landslides, and road disruptions will be high, and authorities urge residents to stay alert and follow official instructions.

The situation is expected to worsen on Monday, with continued torrential rains in areas that may already be saturated. Accumulated rainfall in Puebla and Chiapas will keep rising, increasing the danger of floods and landslides. Officials advise against crossing moving water and recommend staying informed through official channels.
