Mexico City — Mexico’s Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) has released a laboratory analysis of popular sodas and flavored drinks, identifying Coca-Cola Light as the least harmful option among traditional soft drinks.

The study evaluated net content, sugar levels, caloric content, preservatives, artificial sweeteners, and compliance with Mexican nutritional labeling standards. While no soda is considered healthy, the analysis found that some products pose fewer risks than others.

Coca-Cola Light stood out because it contains no added sugars and has significantly fewer calories than other Coca-Cola variants. However, Profeco emphasized that this does not make it a healthy or recommended daily beverage.

Other beverages that performed well included Brillante Tehuacán and Aurrera sparkling mineral waters, which contain no carbohydrates or calories. San Bernardino Zero, a flavored drink with artificial sweeteners, also scored favorably, as did Free Light, which has no sugars and limited preservatives. The Búho brand was noted for its low calorie content, absence of added sugars, and clear labeling.

Profeco also found irregularities in several products. Some brands failed to accurately declare preservatives or sweeteners, while others reported net contents higher than actual. Several products omitted mandatory nutritional information required under Mexican Official Standard NOM-051, which mandates warning labels for excess calories, sugars, saturated fats, or sodium.

The agency recommends that consumers check warning labels and ingredient lists before purchasing sodas. It advises comparing caloric content per serving, as some seemingly light drinks may contain hidden sugars. Experts stress that plain water remains the best hydration option, and carbonated beverages should be consumed in moderation.
