Hunucmá Public Security Alderman Resigns After Woman Alleges Assault

Hunucmá, Yucatán — The public security alderman of Hunucmá has resigned after a woman accused him of assault inside a local bar following the town’s Independence Day celebrations.

Felipe Jaziel Chuc Pech, who oversaw Public Security and Traffic for the municipal government, formally submitted his resignation to the city council, officials said. The council accepted it, and a substitute will take over the seat. The municipality did not disclose the replacement’s identity.

According to accounts that have circulated since the incident, the events unfolded in the early hours of September 16 at Bar Estadio, in the town center, after festivities marking the Grito de Independencia. The alderman was accused of striking a woman, which led to a formal complaint.

The owner of the bar, María Teresa Ceballos, has also been accused of sheltering the former official, while municipal police officers were accused of protecting him and preventing his arrest. Officials said those allegations remain part of the case and must be clarified by the relevant authorities.

In a statement, the town hall said that while the private lives of council members are a personal matter, the municipal administration is responsible for ensuring that no public servant receives preferential treatment and that public security officers act in line with established protocols.

The council said Chuc Pech’s resignation is intended to allow him to present his account before the competent authorities independently and transparently. It added that it will provide medical, legal and psychological support to those affected, according to their needs.

The municipality also announced a thorough and impartial administrative review of the incident and of the performance of the police officers who responded first, aimed at establishing responsibility without regard to rank or position. Officials said they would work with the authorities investigating the case and reiterated that the inquiries must be carried out freely and transparently.

Chuc Pech has not publicly commented on the allegations against him.
