Holbox, Quintana Roo — The island of Holbox is set to become the stage for a new gastronomic event aimed at boosting tourism during the traditionally slow month of September. From September 14 to 16, the 5th International Chile en Nogada Gastronomic Festival will make its debut in the Mexican Caribbean, accompanied by a pre-Hispanic culinary showcase featuring mezcal and chocolate tastings.
A New Culinary Destination
Javier Martínez, spokesperson for the group of chefs behind the Pre-Hispanic Cuisine initiative and organizer of the festival, stated that the event seeks to celebrate Mexican Independence Day while creating a fresh attraction for visitors during the off-season. The festival will take place at the Aldea Kuká hotel, whose owner, Marco García Márquez, emphasized the importance of hosting such an event.
“September is typically a month with lower tourist numbers, so activities like this are crucial to maintaining the occupancy rates we achieve during the summer,” García Márquez said.
International Chocolate Expert to Participate
A highlight of this year’s edition will be the participation of internationally renowned chocolatier Roberto Reta, who will present a pairing of his chocolate with mezcal, adding another layer of appeal for attendees.
With this initiative, Holbox not only joins the roster of Mexico’s gastronomic festivals but also aims to solidify its reputation as a destination offering unique culinary experiences in the Mexican Caribbean.
