Cancún, Mexico — The organization Red Positiva, which supports HIV-positive individuals, has called on health authorities to expedite the arrival and distribution of PrEP and PEP medications, two pharmacological strategies proven effective in preventing HIV transmission.
Two Key Medications
In an interview, Roberto Rojo, director of the organization, explained that Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) consists of a daily pill that significantly reduces the risk of infection for individuals with high-risk behaviors. Meanwhile, Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) is an emergency treatment that must be administered within 72 hours of potential exposure to the virus.
According to official data, 729 cases of HIV have been recorded in Quintana Roo as of epidemiological week 31, with 23 cases reported in the last week alone.
Playa del Carmen Has the Highest Incidence
The activist noted that municipalities like Playa del Carmen have the highest incidence rates and should be prioritized for implementing these measures and providing free access to the medications.
Although the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) offers this program, Rojo warned that its processes are often inaccessible and generate fear or stigma among the population, limiting outreach.
“If the state guarantees real, accessible, and prejudice-free access, we can reduce infections and take a firm step in the fight against HIV in the region,” he emphasized.
