Cancun, Quintana Roo — A 16-year-old high school student was stabbed in both legs after resisting a robbery attempt in Cancun’s Region 91 neighborhood on Tuesday afternoon.

According to initial reports, the attack occurred around 1:30 p.m. as the student was leaving the Colegio Bachilleres campus and heading home. A suspect intercepted him and demanded his belongings. When the teen resisted, the assailant stabbed him in both legs with a knife.

Despite his injuries, the student managed to flee and took refuge in a nearby store, where he asked for help.

Witnesses said the suspect tried to escape but was chased down and subdued by local residents. Some of the angry crowd attempted to take justice into their own hands and nearly lynched the man before police arrived.

Municipal police officers took the suspect into custody and transported him to the Public Security Department headquarters, where he was turned over to the appropriate authorities.

Private paramedics provided first aid to the student and then took him to a hospital for further medical treatment.
