Quintana Roo — Gonzalo Merediz Alonso announced his resignation as Executive Director of Amigos de Sian Kaan on April 16, 2026, after more than three decades with the organization, including 20 years at its helm.
In a statement, the environmental specialist said he made the difficult decision to close this professional chapter. “After 33 years at Amigos de Sian Kaan and 20 years as executive director, I have decided to close this cycle and explore new professional and personal horizons,” Merediz said.
The Board of Directors appointed Rocío Moreno Mendoza as the new director. Moreno had served as Director of Programs since 2024 and will continue the organization’s strategic conservation and sustainable development work. “Leadership and direction now fall to Rocío Moreno Mendoza… who will continue our lines of work and commitments while also generating innovative ideas and actions,” Merediz stated.
Amigos de Sian Kaan, founded in 1986, is a nonprofit recognized for protecting key ecosystems on the Yucatan Peninsula, including forests, reefs, and underground river systems, and for promoting evidence-based public policies.
During his tenure, Merediz highlighted achievements such as consolidating the Maya Kaan community tourism destination, strengthening protected natural areas covering nearly 200,000 hectares, and advancing hydrogeological research that has redefined understanding of groundwater flow in the region.
He also emphasized work with rural and coastal communities and the creation of environmental education tools through the Amigos de Sian Kaan Education Institute to promote responsible use of natural resources.
The former director said he will continue providing technical collaboration on some projects while focusing on his role as president of the Yucatan Peninsula Watershed Council and personal initiatives. “I deeply thank those who trusted Amigos de Sian Kaan and me as its director,” he concluded.
