Gas Tanker Fire on Highway Near Cancun Prompts Emergency Response
Cancun, Quintana Roo — A liquefied petroleum gas tanker caught fire Friday afternoon on the bypass of the Mérida-Cancun highway, triggering a large-scale response from emergency services and federal authorities.
After receiving a report via the 911 emergency line, security personnel from the C5 command center activated response protocols. National Guard officers closed the road to traffic to protect motorists from potential danger.
Firefighters and civil protection crews worked for several minutes to extinguish the flames, which completely destroyed the truck’s cab. Despite the severity of the incident, authorities reported only material damage.
Due to the risk of a possible explosion, officials established a safety perimeter while firefighting operations continued.
Sources at the scene said preliminary investigations suggest a short circuit may have sparked the fire.
