Cancun, Quintana Roo — The National Fund for Tourism Development (Fonatur) has sold out its initial offering of 33 properties in Cancun and is preparing to release its final batch of land parcels, with proceeds earmarked for community tourism initiatives.

Fonatur’s investor relations department announced it will soon publish the terms and locations of the last remaining plots in Cancun, which are among the most sought-after in the country. Between 2023 and 2025, Fonatur offered 33 properties in Quintana Roo for sale, aiming to recover at least 830.3 million pesos as starting prices.

Of that total, 13 plots were located in Cancun, some in the area known as Lomas de Vista Hermosa, with starting prices ranging from 11 to 107 million pesos. The other 20 properties in Marina Cozumel started between 3.8 and 72 million pesos.

The new package of properties Fonatur plans to sell is expected to correspond to the reserve it still maintains around kilometer 12.5 of Cancun’s hotel zone, as announced by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.

She stated that funds generated from selling the “few remaining plots” still owned by Fonatur in Cancun will be allocated to strengthening community tourism.

“Most of Fonatur’s land has been declared a protected natural area; there are still some plots in Cancun, near the Nichupté Bridge, that we’re looking to commercialize for community tourism, but very little land remains,” the president explained.

She emphasized that in the past, money obtained through the Fund from selling national properties was directed toward urbanizing comprehensively planned centers like Cancun. However, following the decree establishing community tourism as a national priority, revenue from selling the last land reserve will go toward training and infrastructure for indigenous communities.
