Mérida Airport Taxi Drivers Strike Over Unpaid Commissions

Flex Shuttle taxi drivers protesting at Mérida International Airport

Mérida, Yucatán — Approximately 20 of the 30 operators for the Flex Shuttle company suspended work between 7:00 and 10:00 hours because they were not paid their commissions from the first half of December. They only received their Christmas bonuses by 10:00 hours.

The taxi drivers explained that for the past four months, the Mexico City-based company has delayed their payments by five or more days and makes them take two days off but only pays for one. This affects them economically because most depend on their commissions to balance their income and support their families.

The dissatisfied workers stated that many work under threat of being “fired” if they maintain such conduct, but in reality, the company, far from supporting them, delays their payments every two weeks and forces them to give up a work day, which they consider unfair.

According to the operators, only five of their colleagues were paid their Christmas bonuses and commissions on Sunday, while the rest received their Christmas bonuses yesterday but not their commissions. They reiterate that commissions allow them to balance their income, given that the base salary is only two thousand pesos weekly, while commissions amount to three to four thousand pesos, especially during this time of year when there are more expenses.
