Yucatán Peninsula: 6,000+ Hectares Shut Down

Mexico City – The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection has reported that numerous properties, totaling 6,325 hectares in the Yucatán Peninsula, were shut down in May and August of this year. The agency reported the destruction of jungle for the planting of agro-industrial monocultures, carried out primarily by Mennonite communities adjacent to the area.

According to reports, between June 15 and August 31 alone, 17 operations and inspections of forested properties were carried out in the states of Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo. Deforestation and land use changes were detected, without having the authorization approved by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources.

The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection stated that in the municipality of Hopelchén, Campeche, two properties were shut down in the ejidos of Xmaben and Francisco J. Mújica, with 248 hectares affected. In the municipality of Tekax, Yucatán, ejido properties in Nohalal, Emiliano Zapata, and Poccheil were shut down, where 996 hectares were affected.

Finally, the environmental authorities expressed their commitment to stop this type of illegal deforestation to protect the green areas, as well as the native species of these zones.
