Tulum Taxi Driver Accused of Overcharging Tourist

Taxi drivers in Tulum facing scrutiny over alleged overcharging and hostile treatment

Tulum, Quintana Roo — A new complaint about alleged abuses in public transportation services has once again generated discontent in Tulum, after a foreign woman reported being forced to use a taxi and facing an elevated charge, accompanied by an intimidating attitude from the driver.

The incident occurred on December 29 in the Aldea Zamá area, where the affected party, a 26-year-old Colombian national, recounted that when attempting to request a ride through a digital application, she was intercepted by several taxi drivers who prevented her from using that service under the argument that only traditional units operate in the area.

Following the intervention of these operators, the woman was directed to a specific taxi that transported her to her residence. However, upon completing the journey, the driver demanded payment of 1,200 pesos, an amount the user considered excessive and refused to cover.

Faced with the refusal, the taxi driver reportedly adopted aggressive behavior, which prompted the victim to request emergency support. Before help arrived, the driver agreed to accept 400 pesos and left the location without any immediate action being reported against him.

This case adds to other similar reports that have been denounced by residents and visitors in different areas of Tulum, primarily in high tourist traffic zones, where accusations persist regarding arbitrary fares, intimidation, and restrictions on the use of alternative transportation services.

The repetition of this type of episode has begun to negatively impact the perception of the destination, especially among foreign tourists, who have shared experiences of irregular charges and hostile treatment during their transfers within the municipality.

So far, it has not been reported whether the involved operator was identified or if any corrective measures were applied, while complaints continue to accumulate reflecting a persistent problem in the local transportation service.
