Coastal Crisis: Quintana Roo Beaches Under Threat

Quintana Roo, home to popular tourist destinations such as Solidaridad, Cancun, Puerto Morelos, and Cozumel, is facing a critical erosion problem. A total of 31.5 kilometers of beachfront are in urgent need of rehabilitation. The most pressing area is Playa del Carmen, where a 12-kilometer stretch of beach is set to undergo recovery efforts.

The project, which will require an investment of at least 800 million pesos, is a joint venture between the government and the private sector. Erosion, primarily caused by swells and hurricanes, has significantly impacted these key tourist destinations. It's crucial to preserve these beaches to maintain tourism and protect the coastal environment.

In Cancun, the project spans from Punta Cancun to Nizuc. Recent studies suggest that rehabilitation efforts should focus on specific areas to avoid disrupting the entire coastal strip. The work will concentrate on four critical points: 12 kilometers in Cancun, another 12 in Solidaridad, 6 in Puerto Morelos, and 1.5 in Cozumel.

The goal of this project is not just recovery, but also the long-term preservation of these vital beaches for the region.
