Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A driver was shot and seriously injured on Monday afternoon in an attack that occurred on Federal Highway 307 as he was leaving Playa del Carmen. The assailants, who are believed to have been traveling in another vehicle, pulled alongside the victim's car and opened fire, causing him to lose control and veer off the road.
The incident took place shortly after 3:00 p.m. near the Dorado Royal hotel. The victim, whose identity remains unknown, was driving toward Cancún. Authorities presume he was being pursued from the moment he entered his vehicle and was ultimately intercepted and attacked far from any law enforcement presence.
Witnessing drivers called emergency services at 911, but none intervened to assist the victim due to fear that the perpetrators—who fled toward Puerto Morelos and may have returned—would come back to finish the attack, potentially injuring others. Upon receiving the report, authorities from Playa del Carmen and paramedics responded to the scene.
Inside the car, responders found the victim with multiple gunshot wounds, primarily to the chest area. He was transported in serious condition to a hospital in Playa del Carmen. At the time of publication, his health status was reported as reserved.
The vehicle sustained at least 15 bullet impacts. After personnel from the State Attorney General's Office processed the area, the car was towed by a crane to an impound lot as evidence. Ministerial police have opened an investigation to determine the motive and apprehend those responsible.
