Mérida, Yucatán — What seemed like a story taken from a movie recently reached its conclusion. The foreigner who spent nearly two months inside Mérida International Airport was not Canadian but originally from Denmark, and he has now managed to leave the city after receiving financial support from his family.
The man arrived in Yucatán as a tourist but ran out of resources to continue his journey or return to his country. Faced with a lack of money, he chose to remain inside the airport terminal, using the airport as a temporary shelter while waiting for his family to send him funds to purchase a plane ticket.
During that time, he slept on benches, walked around the facilities, and purchased basic food items from the airport shops. Terminal staff and workers became familiar with his presence, observing him day after day in the waiting area.
Fernando Lara, an airport worker, stated: “There are people who maybe miss their flight, there are people who maybe don’t come with much money and have no choice but to stay and wait, to save up for another flight, and sometimes they stay to sleep, they stay for days to sleep, they go through hardship because maybe they don’t have anywhere, they don’t have money for a hotel, they don’t have a place to shower, and they have a bit of a hard time because they are moving around.”
According to confirmed information, once the financial support finally arrived, the foreigner purchased his ticket and left Mérida, using the same airport where he had stayed for weeks as his departure point to resolve his situation.
Diana Lozada, another airport worker, noted: “Practically, I’ve been seeing him for almost two months, since November he’s been here a good while, and he comes to buy, but he doesn’t talk much, he knows very few words in Spanish, and whenever he buys he demands his sales receipt.”
The case generated comments among users and employees, highlighting how an airport terminal can unintentionally become an improvised shelter for people stranded far from home.
Although his story has now been resolved, the episode recalled other similar cases that have occurred in airports across the country, where foreign tourists have remained for long periods due to a lack of resources or timely consular support.
