Cozumel Prepares 178th Annual Santa Cruz Festival Celebrating Cultural Heritage

Community members and officials at the presentation of the 178th Santa Cruz de Sabán festival program in Cozumel

Cozumel, Quintana Roo — The community of El Cedral will commemorate the 178th anniversary of the traditional Santa Cruz de Sabán festival, one of Cozumel’s oldest celebrations, with events scheduled from April 28 to May 3.

Municipal authorities and representatives from the Villa Cozumel Ejido presented the religious and cultural program during an event led by the festival’s senior marshal, Martín Cárdenas Ávila.

The program includes religious ceremonies, cultural expressions, and traditional events that annually draw residents and visitors alike.

Torcasita Gual Cárdenas, representing the ejido, explained that the festival originated in 1848 when families fleeing the Caste War arrived on the island from the mainland. Among them was the Cárdenas Montero family, who promised to honor the Holy Cross if they survived their ordeal.

That promise has been upheld for generations, becoming a symbol of identity, resilience, and cultural roots on the island.
