Cancun, Quintana Roo — A judge has ordered pretrial detention for a man and a woman accused of extorting a woman in Cancun, the State Prosecutor’s Office announced.
Maleny del Coral “N” and José de Jesús “N” were formally charged and ordered held in preventive custody for one year or the duration of the judicial process.
According to investigators, the incident occurred on April 25 when the victim went to a ranch in Benito Juárez to work as an interpreter. Upon arrival, she received a phone call from a man claiming to belong to a criminal group, who demanded 200,000 pesos (about $10,000) to allow her to leave.
Unable to pay the full amount, the suspects forced the victim to contact her husband and threatened to harm her if the money was not delivered. The victim made several bank transfers totaling 50,000 pesos.
Despite the threats, the victim eventually reported the crime to authorities, leading to the arrest of the suspects. During the hearing, prosecutors presented evidence, and the judge ruled to bind the defendants over for trial while imposing pretrial detention.
