Cancun, Quintana Roo — Mexican federal authorities have arrested a Hungarian citizen in Cancun who was wanted by Interpol on drug trafficking charges and is among Europe’s 10 most wanted fugitives, officials announced Tuesday.
During the morning press conference led by President Claudia Sheinbaum, Security and Citizen Protection Secretary Omar García Harfuch detailed that János Balla, also known as Daniel Takács, was detained thanks to intelligence sharing with Hungarian authorities.
Balla had an Interpol red notice and a European arrest warrant from Europol for drug trafficking offenses, García Harfuch said. He will be extradited to Hungary in accordance with international agreements.
The arrest was part of a broader security operation. García Harfuch also reported the capture of José Antonio “N,” identified as the alleged leader of a money laundering and fuel smuggling cell. In Los Mochis, Sinaloa, authorities detained José Porfirio “N,” alias “El Pío,” who is wanted for drug trafficking and also has an Interpol warrant. Additionally, Rodolfo “N” and six suspected members of a criminal cell were arrested in Morelos.
