Mérida, Yucatán — A digital platform taxi driver nearly lost his life in the early morning hours after being attacked with a bladed weapon by a couple who allegedly attempted to rob him on streets in southern Mérida.

The incident occurred in the Salvador Alvarado Sur neighborhood, where elements of the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP) detained a man and a woman as they attempted to flee after violently assaulting the driver. The police intervention occurred during a patrol, after the C5i issued an alert following an emergency call to 9-1-1.

The detainees were identified as Cristian Geovanni “N,” 25, and Yesmi Vanelly “N,” 42, who allegedly attacked the driver after their robbery attempt was thwarted. According to preliminary information, the victim resisted the robbery, which triggered the aggression.

The injured man is 74 years old and was driving a Suzuki Swift with Yucatán license plates, authorized as a taxi through a digital platform. He presented multiple wounds caused by a bladed weapon in various parts of his body.

SSP paramedics arrived at the scene to provide first aid and, due to the severity of the injuries, he was transferred to a hospital to receive specialized medical attention. His health condition was reported as serious but stable.

After the detention, the couple was placed at the disposal of the corresponding authorities for legal proceedings, where their legal situation will be determined for their probable responsibility in the crime of attempted homicide.
