Chetumal Woman Warns of AI Voice Cloning Scam After Callers Imitate Her Son

Chetumal, Quintana Roo — A new wave of telephone extortion has triggered alarm among families in Chetumal after a woman reported that scammers used artificial intelligence to clone her son’s voice with eerie accuracy, demanding a ransom for a motorcycle that had been stolen.

According to the victim’s account, the scheme began when her son posted on social media about the theft of his motorcycle. The scammers contacted the young man, claimed they had located the vehicle, and offered to return it.

Shortly afterward, the mother received a call requesting money in exchange for the supposed recovery of the motorcycle. During the conversation, she heard what sounded exactly like her son’s voice pleading with her to make the payment. She later discovered that the voice had been generated using artificial intelligence.

Before transferring any money, the woman hung up and called her son directly. He confirmed he was elsewhere and that the motorcycle was still missing, exposing the fraud.

Once the scam was uncovered, the callers persisted, making threats against the young man and increasing the amount demanded.

The victim blocked the phone numbers used and filed a formal complaint with authorities. She also went public with her story to warn other families about this type of deception.
