Bodega Aurrera to Open as José María Morelos’s First Department Store

A group of people stand in a large warehouse with empty white metal shelving units on a concrete floor beneath a high ceiling with exposed beams and fluorescent lights.

José María Morelos, Quintana Roo — Bodega Aurrera will open here on Nov. 3 at 7 a.m., becoming the first department store in the municipal seat and opening a new chapter in the commercial life of this inland Quintana Roo town.

The store is ready to begin operations, officials said, following an inspection tour that brought together the municipal departments of Urban Development, Civil Protection and Ecology.

Mayor Erik Borges Yam welcomed the arrival of the retailer, saying it fills a long-standing gap for residents. “We now have what we always dreamed of having — a department store that can supply food to families,” he said.

According to details released during the tour, the project already provides jobs for 42 families in the municipality. Town officials will also pursue agreements so that local farmers can sell their harvests inside the store.

The Bodega Aurrera opening adds to other commercial projects planned in José María Morelos. Coppel intends to inaugurate its own store in December, although that date remains tentative.
