Cancun, Quintana Roo — The municipal tourism secretary of Cancun, Juan Pablo de Zulueta, declined to release a projection for summer vacation visitors, saying he will wait for consolidated data before making an official estimate.
De Zulueta cited recent factors such as the World Cup and airline seat availability as influences on tourism patterns this year, making it premature to compare with summer 2025.
“I wouldn’t want to give a number we don’t have… once we have reservations, we can give a much more accurate figure,” he told reporters.
The city will analyze results at the end of July and early August to determine whether visitor numbers surpassed last year or if promotional strategies need reinforcement.
Over the weekend, Cancun International Airport logged more than 500 flight operations, and hotel occupancy reached approximately 72%, de Zulueta noted.
He acknowledged challenges including reduced airline seats and the presence of sargassum seaweed along the Mexican Caribbean coast. The city’s strategy, he said, is to diversify offerings with cultural, culinary, and sports events to maintain visitor interest.
