Cancun, Quintana Roo — The Benito Juarez city council is considering expanding its network of free hydration points across Cancun as temperatures continue to climb, Mayor Ana Paty Peralta announced.

The mayor said officials are evaluating new locations for additional drinking water dispensers to support residents, athletes, workers and visitors who spend time outdoors during the intense heat season.

“With the heat, we want to increase the hydration points in the city,” Peralta said, referring to the strategies under review to broaden coverage of the free service.

The municipality already operates several water stations in high-traffic areas and sports zones, including Kuchil Baxal, Kabah Park, Cancun Park, the kilometer 0 marker in the hotel zone, a fire station and the municipal palace.

One potential new site is the sports complex known as “Los Gemelos,” where many young people, families and athletes gather daily for physical activities.

Peralta noted that hygiene concerns prevent placing dispensers on public streets. “We can’t put them on the street for hygiene reasons,” she said, emphasizing that the equipment must be kept in suitable spaces to ensure clean drinking water.

The extreme heat in Quintana Roo has prompted local authorities to strengthen prevention campaigns focused on hydration, sun protection and health care, especially for children, older adults and outdoor workers.

Health experts recommend drinking water regularly, avoiding prolonged physical activity under direct sunlight and wearing light clothing to prevent heat stroke or dehydration.
