Cancún, Quintana Roo — Major expansion work at Cancún International Airport is now approximately 75–80% complete, with Terminal 1 and Terminal 4 upgrades expected to come online in 2026 as part of a broader plan to handle rising travel demand.
While operator Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste has not confirmed an exact opening date, officials say the project remains on track within its five-year development plan. The timing is strategic, with increased international traffic anticipated in the lead-up to the FIFA World Cup and continued growth in tourism to the Mexican Caribbean.
The expansion focuses on increasing capacity and improving passenger flow—two areas that frequent travelers through Cancún know can be strained during peak seasons.
Terminal 1, which has been largely inactive for the past two years, is undergoing a full renovation and is expected to return to service with a mix of commercial and private aviation operations. Reopening this terminal should help redistribute passenger volume currently concentrated in Terminals 3 and 4.
Meanwhile, Terminal 4—already the airport’s most modern facility—is being expanded with additional boarding gates and a new taxiway designed to improve aircraft movement on the ground. These upgrades are expected to reduce delays, particularly during busy arrival and departure windows.
Here’s what most travelers don’t realize: Cancún already handles around 30 million passengers annually, making it Mexico’s second-busiest airport—and at times, one of the busiest in the world for international travel.
Despite a slight dip in passenger numbers tied to external factors, projections point to a strong rebound, with infrastructure upgrades aimed at staying ahead of demand rather than reacting to it.
For travelers, the impact should be noticeable. More gates, better aircraft flow, and the return of Terminal 1 are expected to translate into shorter wait times, smoother connections, and a more efficient arrival experience—especially during high season.
In a destination where tourism drives the economy, keeping the airport moving isn’t just a convenience—it’s essential.
