Emergency responders at the scene of a fatal crash on the Merida-Cancun highway near Seye, Yucatan

Seye, Yucatan — A violent collision on the Merida-Cancun federal highway Monday morning left one person dead and at least five injured after a van rear-ended a pickup truck carrying construction workers.

The crash occurred around kilometer 25 near the municipality of Seye. According to initial reports, a white van with Mexico City license plates struck a red Nissan stake-bed truck from behind. The impact hurled the workers’ vehicle approximately 100 meters off the road into dense brush, where it came to rest facing the opposite direction with severe damage. The van also left the roadway and stopped among vegetation.

Several workers riding in the truck bed were thrown from the vehicle upon impact, striking rocks and uneven terrain, causing various injuries.

The deceased was identified as Antonio Alvarado Camara, a construction worker and the son of the truck driver, Humberto Alvarado.

Paramedics from the Public Security Department (SSP) arrived alongside municipal police from Seye and state agencies. They treated the injured and coordinated the transfer of at least five people to hospitals in Merida.

Authorities cordoned off the area as personnel from the State Prosecutor’s Office and the Forensic Medical Service (SEMEFO) conducted investigations and removed the body. Occupants of the van did not require hospitalization and remained at the scene pending determination of responsibility.

The accident caused traffic disruptions on the Merida-Cancun highway for several hours during rescue, vehicle removal, and scene processing.

The cause of the crash has not yet been officially determined.
