Body Cameras Reduce Complaints Over Police Detentions in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Body cameras worn by Playa del Carmen police officers have reduced complaints about police interventions and are generating evidence on the conduct of both officers and the people they detain, the head of the city’s Public Security Department said.

Carlos Alberto Montesinos García said the recordings act as a deterrent against inappropriate behavior on both sides of an encounter. He said the department has seen a decline in citizen complaints since officers equipped with the technology began documenting their actions.

Footage Can Support Investigations

Montesinos García said video captured during a detention can also become evidence that accompanies a suspect’s handover to the State Prosecutor’s Office (FGE) or the Federal Prosecutor’s Office (FGR), depending on the case. The recordings, he said, document the conditions of the intervention and any evidence, instruments or proceeds of a possible crime seized at the scene.

The police chief said officers who use body cameras must stay properly trained, because correct operation of the devices can bring greater clarity to investigations. Beyond documenting the behavior of the people officers stop, the equipment also records the actions of the officers themselves.

Montesinos García said more municipal spending is planned for crime prevention, security and equipment, though he declined to give amounts or specify which projects will receive the funding. He said the technological upgrade is also intended to strengthen the department’s intelligence and investigation units.
