Bee Swarm Attack at Cancun Mall Leaves 50 Injured

Emergency responders at Plaza Las Americas mall in Cancun after a bee swarm attack injured 50 people

Cancun, Quintana Roo — A swarm of Africanized bees attacked shoppers at Plaza Las Americas on Friday, leaving an estimated 50 people injured and prompting a security cordon that remained in place through the weekend.

The bees are concentrated on the roof above the mall’s main entrance, near the taxi stand. Civil protection officials said the situation is under monitoring but not fully resolved, as the insects remain in the area.

Five patients who were rushed to hospitals are in stable condition but remain under observation for delayed anaphylactic reactions, authorities reported.

The response involved patrols from the Public Security Secretariat (SSC), Red Cross units, and UREM emergency services. The operation highlighted the need for specialized wildlife handling teams, as the bees remained active into Saturday afternoon, complicating cleanup and the mall’s economic recovery.

Sources close to emergency services said the bees’ defensive behavior may have been intensified by high temperatures and constant vibrations from the mall’s air conditioning systems. These factors, combined with strong scents such as perfumes and sweet food residue, created an environment where the insects perceived customer movement as a direct threat, triggering the mass attack.

Officials recommend that the public remain calm, avoid wearing dark clothing — which bees perceive as predator fur — and report sightings without attempting to handle the insects.

Experts are investigating whether the swarm was transient or had established a colony on site. Meanwhile, the mall is attempting to resume normal operations under the warning that extreme weather conditions will continue to influence bee behavior. The security perimeter will remain in place preventively through the weekend to avoid further aggression.
