Another Night of Blackouts Hits Hundreds of Families in Playa del Carmen

Residents in a darkened Playa del Carmen neighborhood during a power outage

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Hundreds of families in Playa del Carmen endured another night of rolling blackouts late Tuesday and early Wednesday, marking the fifth consecutive day of frequent power outages in the city.

Around 9 p.m., residents began posting reports on social media demanding the urgent presence of personnel from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) in the neighborhoods of Paseos de Sisal, Xcacel, Misión de las Flores, Palmas I, and surrounding areas.

Frustration among residents, who have suffered the outages since last week, nearly boiled over into road blockades. In various Facebook and WhatsApp groups, neighbors threatened to block streets to pressure CFE crews to act.

In addition to reporting damage to household appliances, dozens of social media users said the intense heat in the city made it unbearable to stay home without electricity in the affected zones.

Amid the complaints, unverified information circulated in neighborhood groups that a CFE crew working in Sisal had reportedly detected missing parts due to theft at a substation near the irregular settlement of In House. Officials have not confirmed this.

After about two hours, power was restored in the Sisal development and part of Misión de las Flores, but other areas remained without electricity through the night.

Beyond domestic disruptions, the constant blackouts are causing significant economic losses, as dozens of businesses have been forced to close or operate without power, including several shops at Plaza Las Américas.

The latest update on restoration work came from CFE on Tuesday morning, when it announced planned power cuts in six neighborhoods as part of repair efforts.
