Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Following weeks of violent incidents including shootings and armed attacks that have alarmed business owners, workers, and residents, Playa del Carmen Mayor Estefanía Mercado convened an extraordinary meeting of the Peace and Security Building Committee to reinforce an interagency security plan for the tourist destination.
The decision comes amid growing public demand for stronger security measures after several high-impact events at commercial establishments and nightlife areas. The most recent was an armed attack on June 14 at the restaurant El Camarón Guasaveño, located on Federal Highway 307 and CTM Avenue, where a group of gunmen stormed the establishment, killing one worker and injuring three employees.
The attack triggered a large-scale response from security forces and led to a joint investigation by state and federal authorities. The incident particularly worried the business community because the restaurant had only been operating for a few weeks.
Other violent episodes in recent weeks have included shootings at bars, nightclubs, and other commercial venues, some resulting in injuries and deaths, reigniting debate over the need to strengthen institutional presence in high-traffic areas.
In response, the mayor brought together representatives from the Mexican Army, Navy, National Guard, State Prosecutor’s Office, Civil Protection, police forces, and municipal agencies to establish new prevention and containment measures.
Among the agreements reached, authorities launched an Operational Inspection Plan for bars, nightclubs, and entertainment venues, to be carried out jointly by federal, state, and municipal authorities. The plan aims to verify operating conditions, reinforce preventive measures, and bolster security in social gathering spaces.
During the meeting, Mercado acknowledged that recent events pose a significant challenge for public security institutions and stressed the need to strengthen regional coordination among Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Puerto Morelos.
“It’s time to take action and join forces to reinforce our territory. We are working as a team to continue strengthening security not only in Playa del Carmen but throughout the entire region,” the mayor said.
Mercado stated that while official indicators show progress in security, the recent violent incidents require constant vigilance and redoubled efforts to prevent similar situations from recurring.
Municipal Public Security Secretary Carlos Montesinos said the operations will be carried out in accordance with the law and with respect for people’s rights. Representatives from the Regional Coordination for Peace Building emphasized the importance of maintaining ongoing preventive actions at establishments considered high-concentration venues.
The implementation of this interagency security plan aims to send a message of coordination among authorities at a time when Playa del Carmen faces scrutiny over recent violence that has affected workers, business owners, and visitors. Officials said the operations will continue permanently and results will be evaluated periodically at security committee meetings.
