Xalapa, Veracruz — Authorities discovered 229 migrants, including children, trapped inside a trailer that had been seized and stored in a government impound lot, revealing a critical oversight in inspection procedures.
Police officers initially secured the cargo truck and moved it to a tow yard on Hermenegildo Galeana Street in the Revolución neighborhood. However, during the initial operation and transport, no one detected that the vehicle carried people.
Tow yard staff heard banging and cries for help from the container hours after the trailer arrived. When they opened the cargo box, they confirmed the presence of a large group in critical condition.
The migrants traveled in extreme overcrowding without ventilation and showed severe signs of dehydration. The group included 164 adult men, 41 adult women, and 24 minors—18 boys and 6 girls.
Most victims are believed to be from Guatemala and El Salvador, attempting to cross Mexico under inhumane conditions.
The case highlights a serious failure: the trailer remained under official custody for hours without proper inspection, endangering the occupants’ lives.
After the discovery, security personnel and emergency services provided first aid. Authorities referred vulnerable individuals to the state DIF family services agency, while immigration officials took custody of the others to determine their legal status.
