Mérida, Yucatan — Traffic accidents have claimed 65 lives in Yucatan during the first four months of 2026, according to traffic safety engineer René Flores Ayora, who warned that despite a decrease from last year, the trend remains concerning, particularly for vulnerable road users.

Flores Ayora reported that of the 65 fatalities recorded between January 1 and April 20, 34 were motorcyclists, five were drivers, six were passengers, 11 were cyclists, and nine were pedestrians.

While the figure represents a decrease from approximately 85 deaths during the same period in 2025—a reduction of nearly 20 cases—the specialist noted that accident patterns continue to raise alarms.

“It’s a lower number than last year, but it’s still concerning,” Flores Ayora said.

The expert highlighted that the most significant increases appear among vulnerable groups, with cyclist and pedestrian fatalities nearly doubling compared to the same timeframe last year.

He emphasized that these incidents are preventable and typically result from identifiable factors including speeding, distracted driving, reckless behavior, and alcohol consumption.

“When there’s a traffic accident death, at least one of these factors is usually present,” he indicated.

In response to this situation, Flores Ayora called for enhanced traffic safety education and urged drivers of cars and motorcycles to exercise greater caution, maintain full attention while driving, and respect traffic regulations to reduce accident incidence and protect the most vulnerable road users.
