Tihosuco, Yucatán — Yucatán state has received 61 Community Tourism Certifications for service providers, a federal recognition that strengthens a tourism model focused on local economic development, social inclusion, and biocultural heritage preservation.

Officials presented the certifications in Tihosuco during an event led by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo and Tourism Secretary Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, with 35 of the 61 recognized community tourism service providers participating.

Support for Indigenous and Rural Communities

The certification recognizes projects managed by indigenous, Afro-Mexican, and rural communities, supporting their formalization and consolidation as a sustainable, inclusive tourism offering with local identity.

This achievement is part of the Maya Renaissance Government strategy, headed by Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena, which prioritizes community tourism as a driver of shared well-being and regional development.

With this advancement, Yucatán consolidates a network of initiatives that strengthen the local economy and position the state as a national reference in community tourism, with expectations for more projects to join in coming months.

Training and Support for Providers

Since November 2025, the Tourism Promotion Secretariat (Sefotur) has provided training, advice, and follow-up to participants to facilitate their registration and compliance with requirements, reinforcing support during early 2026 to complete online procedures and strengthen operational capacities.

Model That Preserves Culture and Environment

The Community Tourism Certification recognizes projects where communities own and lead tourism activities, with levels ranging from “Seed” to “Excellence,” promoting job creation, environmental conservation, and protection of ancestral traditions and knowledge.

As part of this initiative, Sefotur developed the catalog “Yucatán: Mosaic of Experiences” with UNESCO, and integrated the state into the national edition “Journeys Through the Maya World.”

During the event, officials also announced the strengthening of community destinations like Maya Kaan, Camino del Mayab, and Pueblos Mancomunados, aiming to consolidate this tourism model nationwide.
