The Yucatán Government and the National System for Integral Family Development (DIF) have joined forces to establish a social assistance center for migrant children. The center, named "Casa U’ulab", is part of the Mayan Renaissance Government's commitment to providing a safe and dignified space for migrant children and teenagers. The initiative aims to address the growing number of young migrants, with a focus on social justice, human rights, and respect for childhood.
The agreement for the center was signed by Governor Joaquin Diaz Mena, honorary president of the Yucatán DIF, Wendy Méndez Naal, and the head of the National DIF, Maria del Rocío García Pérez. The center will cater to more than 50 minors, making Yucatán the 30th region in the country to host such a facility.
Governor Diaz Mena stated that the center is a direct response to the rising number of child migrants passing through Yucatán. He emphasized that the goal is to shift the perception of migrant children from mere statistics to a priority.
"Casa U’ulab" will provide more than just shelter and food. The children will also receive medical and psychological care, educational support, legal assistance, and most importantly, dignified treatment.
The Governor expressed his gratitude to the Mexican Government, led by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, for their support. He also acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the Yucatán DIF, the Attorney for the Protection of Girls, Boys, and Adolescents, and the National DIF System. Their collective commitment ensures that the center has qualified staff, appropriate infrastructure, and an operational model that could serve as a benchmark for the rest of the country.
