Celestún, Yucatan — Authorities in Yucatan have launched a large-scale coordinated operation in the El Palmar State Reserve to strengthen environmental protection and preserve the area’s natural heritage.
The operation, announced by the state government, involves multiple federal and state agencies working together. Participants include the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (Conanp), the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa), the State Secretariat of Sustainable Development, and the Public Security Department.
The primary goal is to safeguard both the Ría Celestún Biosphere Reserve and the El Palmar State Reserve, two of the region’s most important ecosystems.
Actions include surveillance patrols, increased police presence at strategic points, and the installation of checkpoints to prevent vehicles and people from entering restricted zones. These measures aim to prevent damage to the protected natural environment, particularly in sensitive areas home to diverse flora and fauna species.
Officials said the operation will pay special attention to access routes toward the lighthouse area within the reserve’s boundaries, where specific restrictions exist to ensure conservation. Authorities will also provide support to participating personnel and reinforce order in the zone.
The state government urged the public to respect official instructions, avoid entering restricted spaces, and actively contribute to environmental care. It emphasized that coordinated work between institutions helps strengthen surveillance, security, and conservation of these natural areas for the benefit of the population and Yucatan’s ecological balance.
