Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — While Xcaret portrays itself as a victim following a Supreme Court ruling on its use of Mayan symbols, the eco-tourism giant faces over 20 labor lawsuits in the Riviera Maya, primarily for unjustified dismissals.
In the past 10 months alone, more than 20 cases have been filed against Xcaret at the recently opened Playa del Carmen Labor Tribunal, according to court records reviewed by local media. The lawsuits seek compensation ranging from 100,000 to 200,000 pesos for former employees who allege wrongful termination.
Former workers claim they faced workplace harassment from supervisors within the eco-park or at other Xcaret-operated attractions, including hotels and tours, where the company employs hundreds. The legal actions position Xcaret as one of the most frequently sued companies in Quintana Roo for unjustified dismissals.
Despite the ongoing labor disputes, Xcaret has launched a campaign to discredit the Supreme Court’s recent decision, which revoked a suspension allowing the company to continue using Mayan cultural symbols in its branding. Private sector groups have rallied behind Xcaret, framing the company as a victim in the legal process.
However, Xcaret still has legal avenues to challenge the ruling. The company can file a review appeal against the original judgment handled by a federal judge in Mexico City.
