Cozumel, Mexico — To celebrate World Migratory Bird Day, the Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation (FPMC) has organized a special birdwatching event on Saturday, May 10, starting at 7:00 a.m. at the Conservation and Environmental Education Center (CCEA). The initiative aims to foster community engagement, environmental education, and appreciation for nature.

Promoting Environmental Stewardship

Juanita Alonso Marrufo, FPMC’s Director General, emphasized that the event aligns with the institution’s broader efforts to involve the public in protecting the island’s flora and fauna. She noted that these initiatives are part of the New Agreement for Well-being and Development of Quintana Roo, a policy spearheaded by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa to strengthen environmentally conscious communities.

Rafael Chacón Díaz, Director of Conservation and Environmental Education (CEA), explained that World Migratory Bird Day is observed twice a year—once in May, when birds travel to nesting areas, and again in October, when they return to wintering grounds. He highlighted that these periods offer prime opportunities for spotting migratory birds in Cozumel.

Event Highlights

Paulina Sabido Villanueva, head of the Environmental Education Department, outlined the day’s activities. Participants will first attend an introductory talk covering the importance of community bird monitoring, essential observation techniques, and the challenges birds face due to human activity and urban development.

Following the presentation, attendees will embark on a guided birdwatching walk through the CCEA’s green spaces, a preserved area with native vegetation that serves as a habitat for diverse bird species, even within the urban zone.

Additionally, an informational booth will feature educational materials, posters, stickers, and brochures centered on the 2025 theme: "Shared Spaces: Building Bird-Friendly Cities and Communities." These resources will underscore the ecological significance of birds and their role in ecosystems.

Open to All Ages

The FPMC encourages residents of all ages to participate in the event, which will take place at the CCEA, located along the extension of 65th South Avenue. No prior registration is required.

The foundation reiterated its commitment to fostering environmental awareness and providing opportunities for the community to connect with nature through hands-on experiences like birdwatching.
