Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Mexico — A construction worker died Thursday afternoon after falling from a dome under construction at a primary school in this Quintana Roo municipality, where parents have occupied the building to demand the project’s completion.

The victim, who was not wearing a safety harness or other protective equipment, fell from a height of more than five meters around 2:30 p.m. and died instantly, authorities said.

Officials from the State Prosecutor’s Office arrived at the scene to remove the body and begin an investigation.

The accident occurred at the 18 de Marzo primary school, which parents have occupied indefinitely since Wednesday. They allege the dome, originally scheduled for completion in November last year, remains unfinished.

The project manager signed an agreement with the protesting parents, committing to finish the work by the end of the month. However, the parents insisted they would not allow classes to resume until the dome is completed.

Earlier on Thursday, hours before the fatal accident, Zazil Sosa Rodríguez, the Quintana Roo Education Department’s municipal liaison, visited the school to speak with the group. She told them that keeping the school occupied through the end of the month harms their children’s education, but the parents maintained their position. They even warned that if further delays occur, they would block Federal Highway 307.
