Women Business Leaders and Technology Take On Sargassum in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The Riviera Maya chapter of the Mexican Association of Women Business Executives (AMEXME) organized a cleanup day at Playa Fundadores with the support of Grupo Dakatso and the Playa del Carmen city government, responding to Mayor Estefanía Mercado’s call for stronger action against the ongoing sargassum landings.

The effort aimed to show how the private sector can contribute to one of the Mexican Caribbean’s most pressing environmental challenges, demonstrating that coordination between authorities and business leaders can produce tangible results.

New technology for sargassum removal

During the cleanup, Grupo Dakatso demonstrated its sargassum collection system, which includes an amphibious conveyor belt and specialized equipment designed to speed up collection and support broader strategies for managing the seaweed.

Valeria Rindertsma, president of AMEXME Riviera Maya, said the participation reflects the business community’s commitment to the destination’s sustainable development.

“We believe that great actions are achieved when each sector contributes from its own strengths. This cleanup responds to the mayor’s call and shows that the business sector is willing to collaborate on actions that benefit Playa del Carmen,” Rindertsma said.

Institutional backing and participation

AMEXME thanked Grupo Dakatso for providing its machinery and specialized technology, and recognized the support of the Playa del Carmen City Council, particularly the Secretariat of Sustainable Environment and Climate Change, led by Kandy Joana Mendoza Ramírez, and the ZOFEMAT department, headed by Irving Rafael Lili Madrigal.

The association also acknowledged the participation of the Secretariat of Citizen Security and Civil Protection for its role in coordinating the activity.

Finally, AMEXME Riviera Maya recognized its members who took part in the cleanup from early morning, reiterating that business leadership is also reflected in concrete actions to protect the environment and strengthen Playa del Carmen’s sustainable development.
