Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A woman died Sunday afternoon while being transported by ambulance from Tulum to the IMSS-Bienestar hospital in Playa del Carmen, authorities said.

The woman was in critical condition for reasons still unknown when emergency services decided to transfer her to Playa del Carmen, according to initial reports.

Paramedics confirmed she had no vital signs upon arrival at the hospital, located at Avenida 135 and Calle 30.

Municipal police officers cordoned off the area, and funeral home personnel later removed the body.

The death has renewed calls for Tulum to have a full-capacity hospital. Currently, most seriously ill or injured patients from Tulum are transferred to Playa del Carmen, as Tulum only has clinics, medical units, and private hospitals.
