Cancun, Quintana Roo — Federal prosecutors have secured pretrial detention for a man accused of attempting to bring nearly five kilograms of ketamine into Mexico through Cancun International Airport.
The Federal Prosecutor’s Office (FGR) said investigators arrested Luis N. under a court order after he was linked to an abandoned suitcase found in the airport’s customs area.
The case began when National Guard officers spotted the unattended suitcase near the customs checkpoint. A canine unit then alerted to the drugs, which totaled 4 kilograms, 932 grams and 6 milligrams of ketamine.
Prosecutors said the suitcase also contained a passport and a handwritten note with Luis N.’s name. The Mexican citizen had arrived on a flight from Spain, and the evidence led to a judicial arrest warrant.
At his initial court hearing, a judge imposed pretrial detention and granted the defense’s request to extend the constitutional term for the case. Luis N. now faces drug-related charges for attempting to introduce a narcotic into the country.
