Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A 32-year-old man detained on suspicion of sexual assault escaped from the Women’s Justice Center on Sunday, shortly after being brought in for questioning, according to unofficial reports.

The suspect, identified as Ricardo David “N,” was being held at the facility in the Cruz de Servicios neighborhood, behind Plaza Las Americas, when he slipped away. Authorities said he was about to give his statement when he took advantage of a moment of inattention by the police officers guarding him. The officers had placed him on a bench with a free armrest, allowing him to bolt.

He fled into the brush adjacent to the building. A large-scale search operation was launched in the area and continued for several hours, but as of late Sunday, officials had not confirmed whether he had been recaptured.

The municipal police officers who had custody of Ricardo David “N” are now under investigation. The State Prosecutor’s Office has not yet issued a statement on the incident.
