QUINTANA ROO, Mexico — On the occasion of International Shorebirds Day, the Eco-Bahía Foundation, the environmental arm of Grupo Piñero, reaffirmed its commitment to conservation and environmental education through actions that promote the observation, knowledge, and protection of these species, which are key to coastal ecosystems.
More than ten species registered in Quintana Roo contribute to the balance of coastal ecosystems.
Shorebirds are recognized as vital indicators of the health of beaches, mangroves, and wetlands, as they help control populations of insects and small marine organisms, disperse seeds, and maintain healthy ecosystems. However, they face growing threats such as habitat loss and pollution.
During the day, the Wildlife Team conducted scientific monitoring tours, registering species such as the Pectoral Sandpiper (Calidris melanotos), Ruddy Turnstone (Arenaria interpres), Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis), and the Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) on international platforms like eBird and iNaturalist, contributing to global databases for conservation.
In parallel, the Environmental Education program brought children from the Kids Club to the beach for the activity "Let's Count Birds Together!", providing them with binoculars for direct observation. They also participated in playful workshops such as creating shorebird puppets, strengthening environmental awareness from an early age.
"Shorebirds are natural guardians of our coasts. Their presence reminds us of the interconnection between biodiversity, communities, and responsible tourism. At Eco-Bahía, we work every day so that new generations learn to observe, value, and protect the environment that sustains us," emphasized Luis Verdín, manager of the Eco-Bahía Foundation in Mexico.
Since its creation in 1999, the Eco-Bahía Foundation has driven conservation and environmental education programs in line with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, especially in matters of climate action and biodiversity protection.
These actions consolidate the Foundation's role as a regional reference in regenerative tourism and conservation of natural capital, and it invites the community to join in the protection of the environment and marine life by making donations through the official website: https://eco-bahia.com/colabora.
