Bacalar, Quintana Roo — A video circulating on social media shows an alleged extortion incident in Bacalar, where several taxi drivers intercepted a driver from Chetumal and demanded money to allow him to continue his service with passengers.

The audiovisual material, which quickly went viral on digital platforms, captures the moment when several local taxi drivers surround the out-of-town driver and accuse him of picking up passengers within the municipality of Bacalar.

During the exchange, one of those involved suggests handing over money as a way to avoid conflicts, indicating that the payment should be made to the site’s delegate.

In the recording, one of the individuals is heard saying: “Give the delegate a hundred pesos each here, and take him away quickly,” a statement interpreted as an economic demand conditioned on allowing the driver and passengers to leave.

Additionally, the video contains phrases considered intimidating, including: “You’re going to have problems, I’m telling you,” which increased concern about the seriousness of the events.

The video’s publication was accompanied by a message directly accusing a Bacalar delegate of participating in these actions, generating outrage among both citizens and within the transportation sector, who consider that such practices violate legality and the rights of drivers.

Various users pointed out that situations like this damage Bacalar’s image as a Pueblo Mágico (Magical Town), in addition to creating a confrontational environment that affects tourists, passengers, and drivers.

They also warned that the alleged demand for improper charges and the use of threats could constitute serious offenses that should be investigated by the competent authorities.

In light of these events, a call was made to the Instituto de Movilidad del Estado de Quintana Roo (IMOVEQROO) to analyze the case, identify those responsible, and determine corresponding sanctions according to current regulations.
