Mérida, Yucatán — Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena announced the establishment of a new University Iberoamericana campus in Mérida, a project officials say will strengthen specialized talent development in strategic areas and consolidate Yucatán’s position as an educational hub.
The campus will be located in the Cosgaya district of Mérida and represents a key step in positioning the state as a center for specialized talent training capable of meeting the needs of industrial, technological, and service sectors driving Yucatán’s growth.
“Yucatán is experiencing a historic moment of transformation with the Maya Renaissance, which is driving major infrastructure projects, industrial investments, and logistical development,” Díaz Mena said during the announcement. “These are creating unprecedented opportunities, so my government prioritizes investing in prepared human capital and youth with technical skills, global vision, values, and commitment.”
The governor was joined by Luis Arriaga Valenzuela, rector of the University Iberoamericana Mexico City, who noted that Yucatán’s current stability, economic dynamism, and strategic position provide incentive to develop educational infrastructure matching the state’s growth and current challenges.
The new campus will feature academic programs organized into five schools: Business; Basic Sciences; Engineering; Design, Art and Architecture; and Health, Social Sciences and Humanities. The educational model focuses on developing individuals capable of positively impacting their environment.
Díaz Mena emphasized that his administration promotes a model where education, innovation, and industrial development advance together through a comprehensive strategy to expand access to higher education, including new universities like Rosario Castellanos in Kanasín and the University of the Sea in Progreso.
Economy and Labor Secretary Ermilo Barrera Novelo stated that human talent development is central to decisions being made by major local, national, and international companies, explaining that the Yucatán government not only focuses on attracting investments but also on expanding quality educational offerings.
Education Secretary Juan Balam Várguez added that Yucatán is taking a firm step toward the future, noting that the announcement represents more than just significant investment—it confirms that work under the Maya Renaissance government has enabled the state to compete and establish itself as a site for educational initiatives with national and international reach.
