According to unionized workers at the Autonomous University of the State of Quintana Roo (UAEQROO), the failure to pay full Christmas bonuses is due to the university facing an economic crisis, which they directly blame on the Rector’s Office, headed by Natalia Florentini, but not only on the current personnel but also on the previous administration led by Ángel Rivero Palomo.
After members of the Union of Academic and Administrative Workers of the University of Quintana Roo (SAUQROO) revealed that once again the university would not pay their Christmas bonus subsidy, as occurred during 2024, they mentioned that the current rector of UAEQROO indicated that there are not enough economic resources to cover the payment in a single installment.
This incident has highlighted the crisis facing Quintana Roo’s main university, which did not begin with this administration but with the previous one, though it has now intensified to the point where even the teaching staff has been reduced regarding adjunct professors.
In this regard, the unionized workers stated that it is not just about demanding money, but it is a labor right that legally corresponds to them, as it is part of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CCT), and although they have shown openness to being paid in different ways, whether in smaller payments or with vouchers, that does not exempt the university from its obligation to pay them.
The SAUQROO representative stated: “We accept that the payment be made in parts because the university does not have the resources to cover it all, but this is not a situation that affects only the unionized workers, but the entire administrative and teaching community in general.”
Currently, the university staff is immersed in uncertainty regarding the near future, as they fear not only that the payment will not be made in March as finally agreed with the Rector’s Office, but also about the economic situation of the academic institution.
