Xul-Ha, Quintana Roo — Two children aged 7 and 10 from the community of Xul-Ha required emergency treatment following a domestic incident where they were handling explosive fireworks inside their home, leaving them with third-degree burns. They had to be transported to a hospital in the municipality of Bacalar to receive specialized medical attention.
The incident occurred when the children were playing with a firecracker inside their home and it exploded in their faces, prompting family members to immediately request the presence of emergency services by calling 911. The event generated fear and concern among neighbors in the area, as the children suffered third-degree burns.
Paramedics from Grupo RINO were the first to respond to the call as they are stationed in that community, so they attended immediately to handle the case. They quickly loaded the minors into an ambulance to transport them to a hospital for urgent treatment after providing first aid.
En route, the ambulance was intercepted by personnel from the Grupo de Rescate de Emergencias Médicas, who assumed the transfer of the 7- and 10-year-old children to the Hospital Comunitario in the municipality of Bacalar, being the closest facility. The children’s health status was reported as delicate due to the severity of the injuries caused by the explosion.
Following the incident, questions have been raised about the discourse of authorities in Othón P. Blanco, who assured that while permits were granted for the sale of fireworks, the sale of explosives would not be allowed. However, these have been commercially available throughout the month of December.
Thus, questions arise regarding whether the constant inspections they claimed would be carried out are actually being implemented to prevent the sale of explosive fireworks. In case such items were found, they would be confiscated and fines would even be applied to those selling them, precisely to avoid incidents like this one.
